About leader & leadership
The dictionary defines "lead" as "to guide from the front, to direct, to take along." From this word, we get terms like "leader" and "leadership."
A leader is someone who guides people or things.
If you lead a ship, you're a captain. If you lead an army, you're a general. If you lead a company, you're a CEO. There are so many leaders in the world. Everyone is leading someone or something. Even I, leading my family, am a leader. You don't have to lead others - guiding yourself is called "self-leadership." So, we are all leaders.
But are we good leaders? Are we leading well? Or are we just dragging things along without thinking, like eating a meal out of habit? We're all leaders, but I'm not sure if we're all good leaders. At the same time, we're all being led by others. I follow many leaders in my daily life. On my way to work, it's the subway train driver. At work, it's my boss. At the bar after work, it's the owner. At home, it's my wife, the real head of the household. Many people are leading me.
My precious life is guided by many leaders. If they make a mistake, my life could suddenly fall apart. We can see this in the Ukraine war. Bad leadership must stop. We all know that not just anyone should be a leader.
We are all leaders, and we all live under each other's leadership.
We're all tangled up, leading and supporting each other. We can't blindly follow, nor can we lead without thinking. In this complex world, we must always check if we're leading properly and if others are leading properly. When good leaders do their job well, we can have safe and happy lives. All our lives depend on many leaders, including ourselves. That's why leaders are so important to us.
Leadership is crucial for these important leaders. Good leaders have leadership. Companies always want good leaders with strong leadership. Many companies struggle to choose organizational leaders during restructuring. But there aren't many suitable people. Even in companies with hundreds or thousands of employees, they often struggle to find successor leaders. They make succession plans every year, but the candidates are always the same few people.
As someone who was in charge of executive and team leader hiring, I always wondered how to find and create more good leaders. Most of my working life has been spent searching for true leadership.
