Reverse Mentoring
This refers to activities where older leaders try to understand and connect with the younger Gen Z generation. It might involve joining them on TikTok or waiting in line together for a Billie Eilish concert.
From an experiential or trend perspective, it's not a bad idea to try out the things they like.
However, think of Manchester United's coach Sir Alex Ferguson. Even though Cristiano Ronaldo might have liked going to clubs, Ferguson didn’t go clubbing with him.
Instead, Ferguson focused on Ronaldo’s football skills and performance. He always thought about the games and the team, planning formations and strategies. Going to a club was never part of his plan.
Leaders need to focus on work and the abilities of the people (the organization) involved. It’s not necessary to spend time doing the same activities as them. In fact, they might not even enjoy it if you did.
We should carefully consider whether we are covering up the true essence of leadership with the idea of "empathy."
A leader should observe how their team members handle their work and how they think about it. They should then plan strategies on how to achieve results based on their team's performance. This is the true essence of reverse mentoring for Gen Z, and it is the kind of leadership and strategy that leads to secure victories.
